Windows-98 Upgrade Installation
MICROSOFT'S METHOD

Install Windows 3.1 (or 3.11) OR Windows-95

If in Windows 3.1x, be sure you can read your CDROM drive by inserting a the Windows-98 CD, typing its letter and entering DIR
(if not then put your CDROM install disk in drive A: ,enter INSTALL and reboot when complete)

MAKE A DIRECTORY (e.g. C:\WIN98) for the installation ("cab") files

Copy the entire contents of the WIN98 directory on your CDROM to the C:\WIN98 directory

Run SETUP from the C:\WIN98 directory

When Windows is set up in this way, you won't have to reinsert the Windows-98 CDROM in the future when doing hardware and software upgrades)

If upgrading from either 3.1 or an earlier version of Windows-95 that does not recognize FAT32 partitions, you can convert the partition to FAT32 if desired, but YOU CANNOT RESIZE THE PARTITION unless you use a third party utility like Partition Magic. If you don't wish to purchase Partition Magic, but want a FAT32 partition occupying the entire hard drive, ABORT THE INSTALLATION AS SOON AS YOU HAVE CREATED YOUR EMERGENCY STARTUP DISK and switch to Alternate Method #1 below from the beginning with FDISK off the newly created Startup Disk

ALTERNATE METHOD #1(using Win-98 or Win-95-"B" Emergency Startup disk)

Boot to floppy using your Emergency Startup Disk previously created.

Run FDISK. Tell FDISK to enable large drive support UNLESS you plan to install another OS such as Windows-NT that does not recognize FAT-32 partitions. (Reboot)

FORMAT C: /U /S

Install DOS drivers for your CDROM drive (Reboot)

Make a directory (e.g. C:\WIN98 and copy all files from the WIN98 directory of the Windows-98 CDROM to that directory.

Run SETUP from that directory from the command prompt

You will eventually get an "Upgrade Compliance Check" screen. Insert EITHER Disk 1-6 as prompted of your Windows 3.1 (3.11) set OR ANY Windows-95 CDROM into the CDROM drive, and you will get an OK to go ahead.

ALTERNATE METHOD #2(using DOS diskette)

Boot to floppy using a DOS system diskette containing FORMAT, FDISK and SYS.COM.

Run FDISK if a new hard drive, drive needs to be repartitioned, or drive contains FAT32 partitions.

If you will not install any other operating systems, you can convert the partition to FAT-32. I recommend NOT using Microsoft's FAT32 converter, because it cannot resize the partition to enable it to use all the hard drive space. Instead use the third party program PARTITION MAGIC. If you do not wish to purchase Partition Magic, use the method below:

ALTERNATE METHOD #3 (only DOS diskette available, but need FAT32)

Boot to floppy using a DOS system diskette containing FORMAT, FDISK and SYS.COM.

Run FDISK if a new hard drive, drive needs to be repartitioned, or drive contains FAT32 partitions. (Reboot)

FORMAT C: /U /S

Install DOS drivers for your CDROM drive (Reboot)

Run SETUP from the WIN98 directory of your CDROM (do not waste time copying the files to the hard drive)

You will eventually get an "Upgrade Compliance Check" screen. Insert EITHER Disk 1-6 as prompted of your Windows 3.1 (3.11) set OR ANY Windows-95 CDROM into the CDROM drive, and you will get an OK to go ahead.

BE SURE YOU CREATE AN EMERGENCY STARTUP DISK. As soon as you have created your Emergency Startup Disk, abort the installation, and start over using Alternate method #1 from the beginning with FDISK off the newly created Startup Disk
