IF YOU HAVE A BIOS THAT CAN BE SET TO BOOT THE CD ROM
Insert the Windows-NT CDROM into the CDROM drive. (Using this method the hard drive does not need to be formatted first because NT can do this.) When the computer starts go into the BIOS and set the boot order so that the CDROM is checked first. Save and exit BIOS setup. When prompted, tell Setup where to install NT. It must be on a partition no larger than 4096 MB and it must not start later than 4096 MB from the beginning of the hard drive AND it must not be greater than the third partition on the drive. If you want it to reside on a partition larger than 4096 MB, you must first install it on a 4096 MB or smaller partition, be sure to format the partition using NTFS file system, and then later resize the partition using a 3rd party utility such as Partition Magic When the computer makes its first restart, reset the BIOS so that it boots first from the C drive (A then C is acceptable if there is no boot floppy). ALTERNATE METHOD (Install from DOS or Windows-95/98)
CAUTION! Windows-NT cannot be installed if the boot partition is FAT-32!! These directions assume you've already partitioned the drive and set aside a partition for use with Windows-NT, and that you wish to also be able to use an alternate operating system (DOS or Windows-95/98) From Windows-95 or 98, insert the CDROM and click on Windows NT Setup. OR from DOS, change to the CDROM drive letter, change to the I386 directory and enter "WINNT /B". Continue with the installation |

BOOT FLOPPY METHOD -- use this method if you have trouble with either of the first two methods, if you want to install ONLY NT and can't boot from the CDROM, or if your hardware (such as a RAID or SCSI adapter) requires it.
This requires you to have the three floppy disks that are shipped with NT. If you don't have them, you can recreate them on another computer (which doesn't have to be running NT) by entering a command prompt, changing to your CDROM drive letter, changing to the I386 directory, and This creates the 3 boot floppies without installing NT. Boot the computer to the Boot floppy and follow instructions on the screen and any instructions from your hardware manufacturer. Continue with the installation |
