Windows-2000 was designed with you in mind. For some users, however, the older Windows-NT4 is a better choice. Use it if you already are doing so, with no problems. You don't need to upgrade just because Microsoft would like to return some more money to its stockholders. Or you may be one of those unlucky people whose hardware works with NT4 but not Windows-2000. If this is the case, install NT4 as follows: Install it on a partition no greater than 4 GB, with NTFS. If greater space is needed, resize later with Partition Magic. Obtain Service Pack 5 or later from Microsoft (recommend "network download"). Install Remote Access Service, and if you by any chance have an ISA-PNP device such as a soundcard, you'll need to install isapnp also. Then apply the Service Pack. Then get Netscape Communicator -- the IE2 packaged with the OS is so primitive that Microsoft's own sites can't deal with it, but Netscape's site CAN deal with IE2. AFTER you have Communicator installed, you can then get the latest edition of MIcrosoft Internet Explorer. You'll now have an excellent machine. |
