If you are ONLY sharing a printer, and no files, then you need to consider whether the proposed solution is overkill. Many companies can still get by with Windows-95 for this use. The worst risk is that the server will be down and need to be rebooted (or in rare cases the OS might need to be reinstalled). A backup server is generally a LOT cheaper than a Microsoft Server-OS. By using Windows-9x for this purpose, companies avoid the huge costs of licensing the server product (the Workstation product is designed to refuse more than 10 connections). For companies that desire greater up-time, Linux is the most cost-effective alternative. Once Samba is installed, Windows-network printing can be set up, with the only restriction that the printer driver(s) MUST reside on each individual Windows client, so that raw instructions are sent to the printer over the network. |
